This is the Return of the Jedi in this trilogy. What I mean by that is, you already know the characters, so there isn’t much development. You also know going in, that this is the finale so all the loose ends need to be wrapped up. Good feels, not a great movie. No Way Home sought to tie all the previous Spider-Man movies together with the multiverse. Mission accomplished. However, you have to consider that in the past there have been good Spider-Man movies and some not so great ones, when you tap from all of them, you end up with a mixed bag. That’s what this movie is. Not much unexpected, hitting the marks, tying up loose ends and doing it in a mostly visually pleasing way. I say mostly because when the action gets busy, it ends up looking like Michael Bay made this. There are quite a few moving blurry action scenes that feel more like fights in the Transformers movies. The kind of scenes that hurry you through, build the energy but doesn’t allow you to enjoy the actual individual actions or characters.
So what is there to like? It’s Spider-Man. No matter how many movies they put out, I will go see every one of them. Tom Holland has perfected the character. Dr. Strange is really the only one that has any character development and he delivers in every scene. It shouldn’t be a spoiler to say Willem Dafoe is spectacular reprising his role as The Green Goblin. The other returning cast members…good for the story but mediocre to pointless at best.
It’s good to have closure. It’s good to have more Spider-Man movies. It’s good to be able to go out and enjoy cinemas again. This movie is definitely worth a watch. Just don’t expect too much.
Side note: Unfortunately, I feel Tom Holland has done so well playing Spider-Man, it will be hard to accept him in other action type roles. The flop with Daisy Ridley gave the first indication of it. The preview of the new Unchartered movie reaffirmed it for me. I hope he gets more dramatic roles because he is a fine actor. All I see of him in action makes me think Peter Parker, though.
