They tried to 'fix' what people thought was wrong with the original animated series but ended up making it worse. There are so many things about the movie that are inaccurate and bland, the overall plot was shallow. I felt no connections to any of the side characters whatsoever, there was no room for character development. Not to mention some of them, like Honghui, had 0 purpose besides idly standing by staring at Mulan. Many of the scenes felt rushed and unnecessary, as if they were just including them for the sake of trying to stay as close to the original as possible. And for the scenes that DID matter, like the part where she made the choice to take her father's place, had 0 impact and lasted like 5 seconds. Even adding the iconic "Haircut" soundtrack from the animated version composed by Jerry Goldsmith to that scene, even though there WAS no haircut, would have given it more Umph. Not that I'm asking for an actual dragon in the movie, but to give us a subpar CGI phoenix without understanding the real meanings/differences behind dragons and phoenixes in Chinese culture? I try to appreciate this movie for what it is, but as a huge Mulan fan, the more I dig into the details the more faults I find. As a Chinese in SEA I'm very attached to my culture, and this movie was unfulfilling.
