PS5 Review:
Again another new NBA season and another new NBA2K game which feels a bit.......similar. Once you get past the nice shiny and sweet graphics on next-gen the game is a bit "Same old, same old".
The City:
The layout at first looks impressive with nice new affiliated areas in specific team styles. The rest of the city is basically the old city just compressed with the SAME OLD sponsored stores. Now the stores are fine but what grates me is the stock in the stores is EXACTLY the same as last year and THE YEAR BEFORE! The pure laziness of 2K not to change out the entire stock for each brand is an absolute joke.
There are some new courts such as Black Lives Matter court, Kobe etc but I feel they won't change up the design season to season and they will look stale after some time.
The Gym is the same and when I mean the same, I mean the designers literally copied and pasted the old gym with EXACTLY the same awful equipment to work on. I would love to work for 2K seems like just doing last year's work this year gets you a pat on the back.
MyCareer:
This has always been a problem not just with 2K but others such as EA on how to incorporate a story into the NBA etc. The issue with this latest version is...again it's pretty much the same apart from having a protagonist to rival rather than just the media in the last game.
The story is non adaptive and looks and feels very stupid when you exceed all the team's goals and expectations. It's dumb when you battle to become the starter in your position and over the course of 10 games you put up MVP numbers, produce double-doubles/triple-doubles constantly, get player of the week etc only for you to be benched via a cut scene "As you're not working hard enough".
Then there is the laborious tasks of talking to a clothing designer, or music producer, fashion walks, Business talks, "Sound familiar? It's the same tasks with a new twist of rivalling "Shep Owens the protagonist" on being a better person within these fields. It's an odd rivalry based on you being selected before him at 18 and how your team overlooked the great Shep Owens. As anyone who knows how a draft works if you are that good you would be higher on the board, so it seems dumb how the story has him and the media firing shots at you when there were another 17 players selected before this....."Demi-God".
I mean to show how stupid the narrative is, can you imagine 19th pick "Jake LaRaivia" and the media having a war of words with 18th pick "Dalen Terry" over his selection considering people like Jalen Williams, Jalen Duren, Jeremy Sochan, Shaedon Sharpe" etc all selected before him? Jake LRaiva would be crucified and destroyed in real life for his arrogance and stupidity. But 2K don't look at things like this, they just make a story and hope it fits together.
To be honest, I didn't expect much and I got what I expected. As with Fifa/Madden with EA, until there is another rival in this field this is the poor result we are left with, another copy-and-paste game that promises but fails to deliver once you look beneath the surface.
There is a saying that sums up 2K and its attitude with this game. "You can roll a turd in glitter but it's still a turd".
