I was a huge fan of the original Gossip Girl to the point where I rewatched it all the way through a few times on and off. Let me just say that this reboot is not a show I’d feel the same with. Now before I get into it, I will say I did not expect it to be the same as the original by any means.
First off, the teachers clapping back by making some fake account and creating another anonymous gossip girl is really not much to go off of, especially when everything is thrown at you just within the first episode. I don’t like things that drag on and take forever to make a point but honestly I felt like all I needed to see was the first episode considering it told you literally everything you need to know including who “Gossip Girl” is in one single episode, why watch more? I’m sure everyone had their suspicions in the original about who it could be until they finally told you, but that lingering question was there from the beginning to the end no matter what happened all through the show. That was one question you didn’t get a real answer for until the end. It had your attention the whole way. What question is this reboot giving us to ask until the very end?
Also the characters are trying way too hard to be Chuck, Blair, Serena, and Dan. It’s almost kinda awkward how hard that’s being implemented just within the first episode. There’s no build up with each individual character as their own, they’re just practically imitating the original one’s. It’s just messy personalities being thrown at you from all angles at once, it’s a little all over the place. You can easily tell they’re trying to give you the Serena and Blair feel, but it’s not working with those characters very well simply because they are not them, they’re a newer generation.
The acting isn’t all that great either. There’s certain scenes where the eyes look dead when they’re supposed to be “emotional” or “angry”. Its just not something I can ignore.
Overall it’s not supposed to be just like the original but there’s too many implications trying too hard to give us the same feel and look as the original, meanwhile trying to convince us they don’t want us to think of it as trying to imitate what was already created. It’s just giving mixed messages here. Sure it’s going to be based off the basic idea that was already there just in “todays” world, but if that’s the case then try to make different original personalities for the characters. Don’t try so hard make what’s already been done before, aka Blair, Chuck, Dan and Serena. Give us that same scandalous, adventurous, indulgent, dramatic, and exciting feeling by creating original characters that don’t try to copy and paste parts of the original characters. Make the viewers root for and fall in love with characters from scratch because these are all completely different people. Show us who THEY are not what they’re trying so hard to be. What I’m saying is this show has potential in being another modern Gossip Girl to fall in love with, they just need to use originality. There’s a way to keep some of the traditional things from the original and create a whole new group of characters to love as themselves, not who they’re not. It would be different if it was the original characters, but it’s not. It’s not the original coming back, it’s a reboot for a reason.
