This is undoubtedly my favourite film of all time, and with good reason. I had watched it in the cinema back in April of 2007, when it was released, and it has stayed close to my heart ever since.
Each artiste plays their respective role masterfully and conveys to us their plight in the most natural manner possible. Saif Ali Khan and Rani Mukerji are two of the most underappreciated Bollywood artistes, in my view, and they deserve more praise.
There is an aura of authenticity, simplicity, innocence, and purity all around, and no character forces their emotion — unlike most films today.
The music is one of the best Vishal–Shekhar albums that I have ever listened to: It is the cherry on top and helps make this film what it is — brilliant in every way. No song seems forcibly added, and each song serves a special purpose. The beats are catchy, the lyrics ooze meaning, and the melody is unreal.
I have no clue why most 'critics' and people didn't like this film, but in my view, this is the best Hindi family film that has every element in the right amount. It tells us that saving is crucial to one's survival, and plastic money can be an addictive drug that consumes one from within. It teaches us that no matter how many barricades life throws in our way, we must stick with our family and battle our foes together. Our resilience and perseverance is what makes us indestructible.
Facts and reasoning apart, the nostalgia factor alone — and also fact that my life's story is pretty similar to the characters in the film — is enough to make me cry the moment that red, number-11 car crosses the finishing line at the end of the last race and makes me realise that, finally, 'a father, a husband, a racer' has fulfilled all his obligations at the same time.
I thank Yash Raj Films, Siddharth Anand, and all the artistes of this film for making my childhood even more memorable than it already was, thanks to more Yash Raj films like Bachna Ae Haseeno and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic (which also had the magical Saif–Rani pair).
