This show is an easy five stars going away but I think it’s actually better than that. Hear me out. Sherlock Holmes has been the gold standard among detectives the world over since 1887 when Doyle released the first stories, Studies in Scarlet. There have been thousands of attempts to emulate Doyle’s mysteries, none of which are held in such high regard. The whole English-speaking world knows what you mean when you refer to Sherlock. He’s part of the foundation of western education.
I’ve read every story Doyle ever wrote and seen every adaptation. The stories are amazing.
Foyle is better. Horowitz is better. Kitchen is better. Not every episode. But there are at least seven that are the best detective stories in English speaking history. Kitchen is so dominant it’s hard to tell whether it’s the writer, Horowitz, or Kitchen.
It’s hard to change someone’s mind. But when someone mentions Sherlock to me in the future, I will think Foyle. Maybe no one else agrees with me, but that’s ok. The best detective in the history of the UK and probably the world isn’t Doyle, it’s Foyle.
