UPDATE: Finished seasons 2, 3 & 4 and... I'm done. Done with this series... The plot lines are interesting, even fascinating in some places - but ultimately no depth. It's more of the same inconsistency I wrote about before (see below). This could have been a GREAT series if more thoughtfully written. If I were to give my two cents to the writers and producers it would be this: Pay attention to the details of the world you created. That way you won't have to keep going backwards to explain why some technology works in your world when you already established it cannot possibly work.
And for the record - my wife lost interest in Season 3. Ironic because I didn't want to watch it in the first place.
++++
I'll try to review without revealing much of the story. If you want to enjoy it, probably best you don't overthink it as I am (being a Star Trek fan spoiled me).
First - this is NOT science fiction, just fiction, so don't let the fact the story starts in space fool you. It was clearly written by someone who has no patience for inanimate details. For example, with various systems failing all over the space station (the Ark) the Council somehow manages to keep artificial gravity turned on all the time. Late in the first season, this is explained that centripetal force (the fact the space station spins) is what keeps them from floating. If that's true then only people located on the spinning part of the station should have gravity, everyone else should be weightless.
There's a long, long list of examples of scientific falsehoods/impossibilities exemplified in this series, I won't detail them all.
Second, the Ark is not the democracy we assume, it is in fact a republic with harsh punishments for the most seemingly benign actions. Why then are guns allowed? No I'm not talking about gun violence - just simple science. Any errant shot by accident or otherwise can bring down the entire space station. So it can be deadly to ALL. Not to even mention the fact that again - if they cannot keep oxygen and the lights turned on - why are they wasting resources manufacturing guns and ammunition? For that matter where do they get the raw materials? No one has been to the surface in 97 years so it's not like they get iron out of the earth.
Third, while I can appreciate a young Clarke may be gifted in medicine or that she watched her mom do numerous procedures - her healing feats aren't believable.
With that said...…
Most of the acting is quite good. The writing and plot twists are many and sharp. By Season 2 you really don't know what to expect, which is a hallmark of any good entertainment. Still, there are moments where we knew what was coming. In some respects, the most surprising thing is that most of the leaders of the clans are women and they are more ruthless than men. Disappointing in a way. If women are more ruthless than men, then what chance does mankind have to thrive?
I am particularly surprised that the writers are willing to let certain characters die. Some are obvious, others not so obvious. It adds a level of awareness with the audience that not all the good guys survive.
We're only in Season 2 so I may revise this review later, but for now my wife is entertained at least.
