The scene where Pat Hingle’s character, Ace Stamper kills himself is very true to
Life because a lot of people who used to be wealthy in the early 20th century found themselves suddenly slammed into horrible poverty due to the 1929 stock market crash during did lose their minds and did commit suicide, but Whereas the disappointment Deanie Loomis experienced when Bud dumped her suddenly for Juanita Howard, the “bad” girl would have certainly upset Deanie and made her unhappy for several months but in real life would not have been enough to cause her to totally lose her mind and end up spending any time at all, especially 2-1/2 years confined to the psychiatry ward of a hospital. In fact, even the bad experience she had with “Toots” would not have, in real life slammed her over the edge because she at least got away from him before he had the chance to succeed in actually raping her!
Also, the way the mental hospital where Deanie spends 2-1/2 years is made out to look like a luxury country club, with people sitting out on the sun and enjoying themselves indulging in their favorite hobbies such as sun bathing and painting pictures! Nothing could be further from the truth about what mental hospitals are like!
