I definitely understand the frustration everyone feels about constantly being reminded that this character is trans. But something I hated immediately upon realizing this would be a through line in the game is the memories... Oh flash backs... They are similar to seasoning, where less is more.
Personally I feel like the transgender reveal and the flash backs should have been more subtle. For example, I really liked seeing the pill bottle and the sorry letter the kids wrote in the house. I would have loved to have seen subtle signs of abuse around the house with no commentary to keep the player guessing. And no flash backs at all.
And instead of the power of exposition, I feel like games like this should have a more future-focused ability. I know it's nothing new, but seeing into the future instead of into the past I feel like would have been a lot more fun, and you can slowly see your characters changing to be more good, evil, or neutral. You know, where your choices actually matter.
They could completely cut out a good chunk of the observable items, and have some still be pointless, but also some things you choose to look at and remember partially affect your characters' mental state. Keep the inner monologue short and sweet about each item so you can focus more on character development, or even puzzles! Let the foresight powers and the memories you find collide so you can truly make your own decisions on who you want your character to be! Keep the mystery with the family, but give more power to the player to create a more demential game.
