Loved the preview. Refused to listen to the critics. Then hated the movie ☹
I want to first point out that I have never seen the Broadway performance of this, and its possible I just do not like it period. I cannot compare the two. However, I honestly think the best way to describe this movie is in two ways: for the artistic, musical, theater kids and snake charmer types - its probably above average and quite on track for theme. I will say my nephew, who is very artistic and musical said that he loved it - except towards the end where he believed it drug on too long. He was shifting in his seat sighing and said it should have ended 15 minutes earlier than it did. Otherwise, he loves it. That's the best review I can give for Cats.
Now.... for the rest of us...and all of humanity..... this movie Creeped. Me. Out. There was something just incredibly eerie and occult feeling about the whole thing. The chanting, the hissing and the cat stomping... all of that freaked me out. I dont think I've seen a more disturbing movie since A Clockwork Orange. I really thought from the preview that I would love it. I'm ok with musicals, with fun animation, etc. All of the boxes were checked. But there was just something that felt so sinister, so evil about this movie that I just couldn't shake the entire time I was there. It almost felt sickening. I really wanted to get up and leave 20 minutes into the show. If it weren't for my nephew and the look of joy on his face, I probably would have.
Reading several of these reviews on here and seeing a common theme - here is my recommendation:
If you are someone like my nephew (as described above) or you are a Broadway musical enthusiast ..... By all means. Its probably right up your alley. As for everyone else.... RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!
