For me, I really disliked movie 8, and this one played it A LOT safer (maybe a little too much). It wasn't perfect by any means and it did leave some to be desired, but the plot was more solid and didn't feel too strange like the gambling planet in movie 8.
If you didn't like movie 8, I think you might enjoy this one.
