This movie ruined Star Wars for me forever... and I didn't think that was a possibility.
SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT:
Here's where this movie went wrong... Rian Johnson. It took this movie to have the fans and everyone else to see the plot holes created and arcs closed by Rian Johnson in " The Last Jedi". And let me be clear, aspects of "The Last Jedi" would have been amazing in this movie but Rian killed JJ's plot from "The Force Awakens" (Snoke dying, Rey's parents being nobodies, Jedi's dying after using the force, Luke and everything about him, light-speed kamikaze runs... ect). JJ did everything he could to save this film... but he had to force the plot so much from the holes created by Rian that the whole movie was filler and jumped around unnecessarily. For all three movies, very little could be closed off from an over arcing plot in each one and Rian created more plot holes which caused the whole universe of star wars to become unstable. There will never be another good star wars movie so long as the plot holes created by "The Last Jedi" remain... this movie proves it. You can easily see that JJ had no idea how to wrap up the plot holes created by Rian , he was forced to bring back Palatine from the dead just to give Rey actual parents that mattered. He was forced to give Leia a back story showing she was strong with the force but didn't show it in "The Force Awakens" because she was scared (again Jedi's can't have fear from past films so why is this in here?)... but then she all of a sudden does the very thing that almost kills her son which is what she feared anyways. All to cover up the plot holes created by Rian.
Also, editing in this movie was terrible. I found myself asking why they showed us scenes in the order that they did more often then not. I would have loved to been surprised that Chewy didn't die... instead they showed us he was alive almost immediately after the ship was blown up. This created a plot where you knew they would be okay because they had to rescue him as a side mission (more filler). The whole movie was a side mission to get to the end which was extremely anti-climatic because you already knew what would happen. From the first 20 minutes you knew Rey was related to Palatine in some way because they showed him with Kylo in the very first scene. From that point on you know we will have the same basic plot from return of the Jedi. You knew Kylo would turn good and that Rey would defeat Palatine. The rest of the movie was just filler to get to that point and it was done very poorly in editing and in each scene. When Rey dies at the end, you knew Kylo would come back and save her using his newly discovered force healing and apparently Kylo/Ben became stronger than Plegasis in the course of 5 minutes climbing back up a cliff. The whole Force healing thing (thanks baby Yoda) really messes up the plot of star wars and creates more plot points. If you could simply heal people, why the hell didn't Luke save his father while he could or Aiken his mom...
I walked into this movie not knowing what to expect, i didn't read reviews or watch the trailers. I left saying Star Wars is dead to me and again, I never thought that would happen. I loved "The Force Awakens", I thought it brought new elements that could have been developed on it's sequel... but Rian wanted to do his own thing instead of following the road map JJ laid the foundation for. This movie made it apparent that Rian Johnson ruined star wars by adding unrealistic new force physics, laws, and expectations that were not present in any past episodes. This one fact will lead all future films to follow the same plot convenient force abilities.
