A very scary, unpredictable story, with menace coming from all directions. Things that are supposed to be pleasant turn out to be dangerous or disgusting, like pretty fruit that’s rotten on the bottom. Social interactions that are supposedly just friendly and inquisitive become hostile appraisals that seem on the verge of murderous intimidation. The men are either threatening and hungry in their approach to the women in the film or lonely and pathetic. But they aren’t stereotypes; they’re convincing as varieties of the male species. The female characters are realistically in agony over their appointed roles in life, either sacrificial or deeply guilty if they want to break free. The acting is superb, deep and measured in all their roles. The film was exhausting because it was so tense and suspenseful, but extremely engrossing. I wish it were a series, so that it went on and showed us more of all of their lives.
