Ankle socks are okay again. For anyone who followed the Great Sock Height Debate of 2024, this may come as a surprise. At the time, Gen-Zers (at least those on TikTok) alleged that they could tell how old you were depending on your sock height: Ankle socks gave away that you were a millennial, while crew socks signified you were Gen Z. Two years later, though, it seems Gen Z has changed its mind. Of the 50 Gen-Zers writer Bella Druckman surveyed for this story, just eight said they still preferred crew socks to ankle socks. The newfound appeal of the ankle sock comes down to wanting a more polished look. “I don’t really like the look of socks, honestly,” Connecticut-based 18-year-old Annetta Solari said. “I don’t think any of my friends even own tall socks,” says Nebraska teen Presley Schrader. Not to mention, shorter socks make for better tan lines than crew socks: “I didn’t want to be walking around school with a tan line almost up to my knee,” Ohio-based 22-year-old Cam Behaein say

The sidewalk outside Uruguayan restaurant El Chivito D’Oro is usually like any other corner in Jackson Heights, Queens — busy with people passing by and coming to dine. But during a World Cup summer, this spot in the middle of Little Colombia is where five to six dozen people cluster every day, calling out “Qué te falta?” and “Whatchu got?” It’s the neighborhood’s unofficial hot spot for Panini-sticker trading. Since 2010, or what soccer fans refer to as “four World Cups ago,” a crowd has gathered here in pursuit of one goal: to complete the FIFA World Cup sticker album sold by the Italian collectibles company Panini. This year there are 980 stickers in all, one for every player and every participating stadium. As with blind boxes, it’s inevitable to end up with duplicates. That’s where the trading comes in.
