One of the ideas from my conversation with Neal Schore that has stayed with me is his distinction between ordinary and exceptional leadership. Most leadership books tell us what exceptional leaders do. Neal asks a more interesting question: why do ordinary people repeatedly choose ordinary responses, even when they know there’s a better way? His answer isn't about judging people or dividing the world into “good” and “bad” leaders. Ordinary simply means doing what everyone else does because it feels familiar, expected, or programmed into us. Exceptional begins when we're willing to interrupt that pattern. Sometimes the most meaningful leadership decision is simply to ask, “Why am I doing it this way?” And then have the courage to change it. That idea applies far beyond leadership. We all have patterns we've inherited, responses we've rehearsed, and ways of operating that once made sense but may no longer serve us. There are seasons and moments in life when everything seems to be moving in the right direction, yet something inside you keeps asking you to look again. I experienced one of those seasons while transitioning from 𝗟𝗼𝘄𝗲'𝘀 to 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗹. I had plans for what came next, but beneath those plans was a persistent feeling that I wasn't fully listening to what my life was asking of me. At first, I ignored it, but eventually, I realized I had become very good at helping others pursue their goals while putting some of my own deeper calling aside. Eventually, after my time at 𝗗𝗲𝗹𝗹, I heeded that call and it changed the direction of my life. We tend to talk about focus as though some people were simply born with it and others weren't. Dandapani's story made me question that assumption. As a child, he struggled deeply with concentration and was teased for it. Years later, during his time as a monk, someone finally taught him how to concentrate. That distinction matters. He wasn't handed more motivation or told to try harder. He was taught a skill and given the opportunity to practice it. That idea changes the conversation around attention. If concentration can be learned, then every moment we deliberately return our attention to what matters is part of the training. The skill grows through repetition, just as any other skill does. I’ve been thinking a lot about how much of our time and energy can disappear into something that, in the moment, feels completely justified: our reaction. A difficult comment, a frustrating interaction, or a misunderstanding can take only a few seconds to happen, yet we can spend hours replaying it, interpreting it, talking about it, and carrying it into everything that comes next. Neal Schore calls this the “swirl,” and I think that’s such an accurate way to describe it. What struck me most in our conversation is that we have more agency here than we often realize. We may not control what someone says or how they behave, but we can choose whether we carry the weight of it forward. Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is pause, get curious about the other person's intent, and decide whether this deserves as much of us as we're giving it. Every room has a climate. You've probably experienced it without realizing it. One person walks in, and the conversation grows lighter. Another enters carrying tension, and everyone else instinctively adjusts. Nothing has been said yet, but something has already changed. For a long time, I assumed emotions belonged to the individual experiencing them. What I've come to understand is that they rarely stay there.
