While the base execution of Dracula Untold was raw and amateur, the story draws from an accurate historic placement and origin of the real Vlad the Impaler (the real person who inspired Dracula).
The human character of Vlad the Impaler differs from what historians say about him, and this story focuses not on the monster that is Dracula, but on a man so desperate to protect his family and people, he was forced to summon a power far beyond his control.
To me, Dracula Untold is grossly unsatisfying if seen as a fantasy, action or horror film. But it's everything I would have wanted in a good love story. And for that I love the film.
