This movie is a perfect demonstration of why we need diversity behind the camera. It tells a story that probably wouldn't occur to a white male to tell, but even then he wouldn't have the access that a black woman has to get the story documented.
All that said, this movie is sad and hopeful. The girls will break your heart with their own retelling of their stories, but then we see how they've blossomed. We see a community waking up to advocate and to help. But then we also know the scale of the issue is large.
Personally it motivated me to reach out to support The Soul Sisters Leadership Collective, whose work is included in the film. To the extent that it increases recognition and support of organizations doing work in this field it will serve an even greater purpose than merely to inform.
