This show had potential to be something more.
The series gives equal attention to both main characters, and has an interesting take with Claire. There is a focus on her trying to grow and make amends, but it is portrayed that she still is thinking about herself and not the person she hurt. I am glad the series didn't give her a half hearted "redemption arc" It also does well addressing the issue of female predators and how society tends to overlook male survivors. Not just the frat boys, but also other girls who claim to be feminists.
My issue overall is the pace of the story, and dealing with Eric's aftermath. There is not enough time spent focusing on grooming behaviors from Claire, or the struggle Eric has dealing with trauma. It is a little too easy to see their relationship in a positive light. It would have been more interesting to see Eric first looking back on it with rose colored glasses, and then later flashing back to the more sinister aspects of the relationship.
He sort of just finally admits he has to go to therapy, but the series skates over the hardships that come with that. The self blame and responsibility he feels is not addressed with beyond a few throw away comments. We do not get to see the ugly part of recovery.
It is nice to see that Eric gets to confront his abuser and "put her in her place." Unfortunately it is not something many survivors get to do. And even Eric doesn't get the apology he deserves.
