It's an excellent series, but David Milch and company took a lot of liberties with the actual history. Just because they wrote about real historical figures, doesn't mean they were portrayed accurately, nor was history related correctly if it got in the way of Milch's idea of good drama. Although the show is extremely compelling, Milch's bloody fingerprints are all over it, like a "creative" crime scene. As for the language... producers admitted they used modern profanity because today's audiences wouldn't have recognized 19th century cursing. Anyone who thinks the language actually reflects 1870's Deadwood, simply doesn't have a clue about how people spoke, or cursed, in those bygone days. Be that as it may, there's a reason this show had such a loyal following. The producers brought the wild west to life in a way modern audiences could totally relate to. On my personal ten scale, I rate the overall series a solid nine. Faulty history or not, it takes only a few episodes for most viewers to become totally invested in this show!
