Not sure why people are raving about this. Central character is selfish, unlikeable and mostly defined by chess genius and her substance abuse problems. Other characters appear and then largely disappear as the central character abandons them. Chess victories are mostly defined in the most shallow way, by how many moves it took her enemies to succumb. There's no serious attempt to help us get inside her chess thinking, as was done by, for instance, Hikaru no Go (recommended). There is some good acting, but I feel these obviously skilled actors could have done something much better with a good story.
