Donโt get me wrong. Itโs not like the movie sucked, but the message with misleading. Ted Bundy brutally murdered at least 30 women within a span of 4 years (1974 - 1978). He was a sick man. When I did some research on him, it disgusted me. But thatโs how I should feel, and thatโs what the movie should have made me feel towards Ted Bundy. He was a sick man. But instead, the movie used a different tactic to express who Ted Bundy was: charming. And he was played but someone most people already find charming and adore (including me): Zac Efron. I guess they thought it was a clever approach, but at the same time, it was an inappropriate approach as well. By the end of that movie, I didnโt feel as much disgust towards Ted Bundy compared to when I read about him. By visually seeing his cruelty, you would have thought that my disgust for him would have been stronger. But it wasnโt. At parts, I felt bad. And I shouldnโt have!! He was a sick man! He deserved this. But some parts made me feel sympathy, that kind of makes me feel insensitive...
Iโm not saying that the graphics needed to be more intense. To be honest, the most R-rated thing about this movie was its language, not much the visuals. But I respect that because there are still a few Ted Bundy victims who have survived and are alive to this day. Seeing what he had done to other women may be incredibly triggering and scarring. So I appreciate the movieโs sensitivity on that behalf.
However, the feeling that I had towards Ted Bundy by the end of the movie was not right. It was insensitive of me to feel some sympathy for him here and there. I should have felt horrible and hatred towards this serial killer. But I feel like the movie failed to do that. Iโm not saying that they should have left out his charming side completely. I am aware that it played a major role during his murder time-span and trial. But there should have been more scenes showing his sickening characteristics so that it would balance out the charming approach. It didnโt have to be too graphic, like I said, there are surviving victims still alive to this day. But there should have been some balance.
Thank you for the dedication that was put into this movie, I know that you guys worked hard on this. Zac Efron, as usual, your acting skills were phenomenal and believable. But hopefully you guys, or any other directors out there, can note this in the future.
