As a usual fan of Taylor's work I will just say right off the bat that I did not like this album. I previously loved albums such as 1989 and Reputation being my favourites. I have always liked Taylor's musical style and have mostly gotten used to her usual lyrical fare of getting back at men who have wronged her, and I enjoyed it.
However, this album is where it really changed for me where I was really shown the darker side of her lyrical writing and it left me feeling pretty unsettled if whether this is just a new style she is trying out, or if she is actually for real when it comes to this.
Gone are the carefree melodies and smart but stirring writing, and now it is replaced with vitriolic, vindictive and downright malicious lyrics and overall downtrodden and depressing atmosphere to most of her songs on this that seem to instill a message of permanent unforgiveness and retribution.
I've already forgotten most of the tracks on this record minus 2 of them. First one is of course "Fortnights" which I must have heard play on the radio at least 50 times now over the past year. The central message of this song is that she wants to kill someone who already apologised to her over something, I forget what that is though. I know it can be fun to write about revenge, but I was still never a fan of this one.
The only other song of this album I remember is "The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived" which is a breakup diss track taken to the absolute extremities of negativity and villifying behaviour. Breaking someone down to the most insignificant and pathetic form to the point that they are basically worse than nothing. That is what I took away from this song and it has haunted me by just how horrible it is. Then it ends with Taylor saying "I will forget you, but I will never forgive". Finally hitting home the core message of this album to her listeners. Permanent unforgiveness.
If you have ever had to go through the experience of apologizing to someone time and time again with sincerity and being genuine, only to have that someone tell you time and time again that they will never forgive you. You know that is the worst feeling in the world and that you would not wish that one your worst enemy.
So yeah. I didn't like this album at all. I forgive Taylor for this, but I have honestly forgotten most of it by now.
