I am not going to lie, this movie was a bit disturbing for me. The story follows a nineteen year old girl in the apocalypse who gets seperated from her younger brother. I'm trying not to spoil too much but the movie mostly focused on her time in this (I guess) religious community the male lead takes her to. From the beginning, I had a feeling the older man was a creep and lowdown considering that he was watching and following her. (He also watched her bathe in a lake if I'm not mistakened.) I was hoping he would be a decent man who wouldn't hit or prey on somebody so young who's just trying to survive. Not to mention she's not that much older than the other young girls in his community. And the whole 'sponsor' thing I felt was a hint at something beyond that (possibly grooming).
Also, I don't know how any other viewer could be charmed by this guy or the community. My red flag detector immediately went off when I spot the first sign of a weirdo. But anyway, I feel like this segment of the film really made the movie go off track and in another direction. With her being fought over and weird stuff like that. Not to mention the attempted SA scenes.
In my opinion, I think the 'predatory older man' trope was just unnecessary. And I was hoping the film would've focused more on survival and her finding her brother sooner. The film could've went more into depth about the apocalypse and the factions and stuff. And the acting and dialogue was a bit painful but okay; it took everything in me not to turn my television off..
