I LOVE this show, but was not happy with how they portrayed solutions toward improving education for autistic children. Rather than approaching it at the root of the problem - increasing school funding and appropriately funding support services for the handicapped - the show seems to bash public education in a very generalized way. The program portrays running for Mayor and switching to a Charter school or starting a new Charter school as the answer to failures of the public school to meet the specialized (and expensive) special needs of their son. In fact, Charter schools and private school frequently have a WORSE track record of supporting special needs. Here in Northern Minnesota, our High School has hired an AMAZING autism specialist and the public schools are doing a terrific job of meeting these needs on a very limited budget. I appreciate that the show increases awareness of ASD, but their approach to education improvement is flawed.
