Kind of a weak adaptation of the original Malayalam movie- The Great Indian Kitchen, although Sanya has done such a brilliant job in what she was offered. Her facial expressions convey the tumult she goes through. The kind of toxic patriarchy portrayed in the movie still prevalent in many Indian households can be quite triggering for some women.
I felt that most scenes that left a lasting impact in the original- like the repetitive routine, the stigma around menstruation, the way the woman vigorously washes her hands each night to take the smell off her hands, and many such things were watered down heavily in this adaptation, and hence, the frustration that keeps building up wasnโt very evident.
The original is brilliant. Please do give it a C watch.
Added note- itโs quite telling that almost all the 1 star ratings of this movie are by men who think this movie is unrealistic and made to make men look bad whereas almost all the 5 star ratings are by women who know that situations like these are real. Open your eyes, dear men. Patriarchy is real. Definitely so in India, educated households regardless. Raise your sons right.
