My husband and I are loving this show. Omar Sy is a joy to watch as Assane. His screen presence dwarfs that of others in the cast. But that's not to say they aren't good characters or actors. They all play their parts extremely well. It's just that Omar is a born scene stealer.
The plot is twisty, and gracefully moves back and forth in time. It revolves around the theft of a Marie Antoinette necklace being auctioned off at the Louvre. Through flashbacks we learn that it now is owned by a wealthy man, Pellegrini. Assane's father worked for him as his driver when Assane was 14. Pellegrini's wife is kind to Assane and his father and Assane is given a choice of a book to read about a master thief, Lupin.
However soon the necklace is stolen from the Pellegrinis when Assane was 14. His father is arrested for the theft, signs a confession, and commits suicide in his cell.
Revenge becomes the driving force behind Assane's theft of the necklace and much more. Of course, he has thoroughly learned Lupin's heist methods and uses them successfully to accomplish his goals. This leads to cat and mouse activity between the police and Assane.
The writers have made the plot pretty easy to follow even though it skips around a lot through time. It often just enhances a plot point of the present activity.
The character of Assane is one of an artful thief, gentle father and friendly ex-husband. It easy to love him and root for him.
I don't want to give away more of the plot as it is full of twists and surprises that only make it more enjoyable. Netflix has been dubbing foreign films in English and other languages which makes it easier to watch than subtitles. And this show moves too fast to read subtitles anyway.
This is definitely a show both male and female will enjoy. In my marriage there are some shows that are his and some are mine. This one is for both of us.
