Respect this series for truthfully representing the terrible crimes committed in all nations at this time, and unfortunately in the ensuing years. Those that are critical of the smoking are denying the historical fact that smoking was something many, many adults did, particularly those in depressing or challenging jobs. My own doctor smoked in the 80s and 90s! My wife smoked in labor in the early 70s. Why do viewers think its acceptable to see detectives drink at bars after a hard day's work, but are horrified if they are shown smoking? We quit smoking 35 years ago . . .

Tried to appreciate this. Loved Moonrise Kingdom and Grand Budapest Hotel but this was incoherent and even worse, smug. A narrative or theme of some kind is basic to any art in my opinion.

I agree with the critics who call 1883 brilliant. Both the cast (Sam Elliot, Isabel May(!) and so many others) and storyline are outstanding. Certainly ranks as one of the very few prequels that far outdo the original.

Spectacularly uneven but important film. Excellent cast, many memorable scenes, the tunes of Marvin Gaye, and a script that pays tribute to those who served during turbulent times.

If you have watched and are a fan of shows such as the Nordic Noir series Wallendar (the Danish original), the Bridge, the English series Broadchurch and Hinterland you will love Bordertown. It's a little darker than those mentioned but doesn't overly sensationalize the cases, in fact the investigators, rather than the cases they work on, are what makes the series work so well. Ville Virtanen is extraordinary as the lead detective.
