I knew Karl growing up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was always impressed with the bands he founded and/or joined. One band in which he served as a co-founder and songwriter, Sluggo, was a bright light on the city's punk scene and showed us aspiring musicians what being creative on your own terms meant. Getting your own 7" EP with xeroxed, thought-provoking lyrics pressed and sent out to fanzines across the US -- this was a work ethic not many teenagers in the Midwest had. So when I heard he'd been working on something in 2019, I was all ears. And I was not let down. Career Ending Move features Karl playing almost all the instruments and taking on vocal duties. It sounds like he's having fun and getting some things off his chest. It's raw in places, and refined in others. For being primarily a bassist, Karl's guitar playing is impressive. Throw in that he's been playing with legendary Chicago blues figures for years, and you know that Karl is drawing from a wealth of experience unattainable for most musicians.
