The review bombing on this game is insane. All comments about "wokeness" and "pronouns" are unbelievably over the top and not an accurate reflection of the game either. Ignore them!
I've played DA since the beginning with Origins in 2009, and Veilguard is a good entry in the series. Flawed in places but nothing that seriously takes away.
The game is very reminiscent of DA2, which was a controversial entry as well, but still much beloved. Character interactions and style play very heavily on the linear interface of DA2 as well. But this is not a bad thing, in fact it takes the good from DA2 and expands on it.
The combat is a lot of fun, and I always prefer story, so that says a lot. Currently 20+ hours in as a rogue and I'm not groaning at every combat encounter, instead enjoying it.
The characters are true to DA style, quirky and interesting, endearing in their own ways. I do wish we had more interactions from previous companions and games. If there is a major flaw for me, it is the lack of lore from previous games and references to our choices from previous games. The Keep needs to utilized in future updates, even in just in codex entries.
That being said, the story picks up where we left off in Trespasser with seeing what Solas' plans lead to. The story is full of elements of previous games but from the Northern Thedas perspective, so it does feel new in many places. It's still engaging and keeps you pushing for answers.
The world is more linear but still open. It's not as massive as DAI but feels more like DAO with decent sized maps with lots to explore as you progress.
I've given Veilguard 4 out 5 stars, the 5th star missing because our choices in the Keep and world building lore is lacking significantly, but everything else about the game is everything I hoped for as a long-time fan of Dragon Age!
It's definitely worth your time and money!
