I read this book with my 8 year old son before bed and we both really enjoyed it. We happen to live in present day Norvelt, so it was pretty exciting to read a fictional book about a place that is very real to us, yet in a much different time. I honestly felt quite bad for little Jack. Particularly for being punished to such an extent for an act his father made him commit (cutting down the corn his mother planted), along with having to dig out the hole for the bomb shelter. I am all for work ethic, but poor Jack had quite a burden on his young shoulders. Gantos is a truly tale ye writer!
