Roger Ebert gave this movie 3 stars, and he must have been in a charitable mood that day, but I agree that it is a movie worth seeing. My opinion is influenced by the fact that legendary folksinger/activist/humanitarian --- and my personal hero --- Pete Seeger, appears in the opening scene, singing a great song he wrote specifically for the movie. "Old Devil Time" is a song that eloquently enumerates the great challenges we all must face in life, and gently urges us to persevere and help each other. The last verse says, "No storm or fire can ever beat us down; no wind that blows, but carries us further on. And you who fear --- oh, lovers, gather 'round! And we can rise and sing it, one more time."
Otto Preminger shows a heavy hand at times with the story of several misfits who take up residence together, and the difficulties they face. But fine actors like Ken Howard and Liza Minnelli are worth seeing in these early roles in their careers. And that song by Pete Seeger weighs heavily in my evaluation, so there's my bias.
