The story follows Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio), a skilled thief specializing in "extraction," the art of stealing valuable information by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets during the dream state. This ability has made him a coveted player in corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive, preventing him from returning to his children.
Cobb is offered a chance at redemption by a powerful businessman, Saito (Ken Watanabe). Saito proposes an impossible task: "inception" โ planting an idea into a target's mind instead of stealing one. If Cobb succeeds, Saito promises to clear his criminal record, allowing him to return home.
Cobb assembles a team of specialists for this complex mission: Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), a seasoned research expert; Eames (Tom Hardy), a master forger capable of impersonating others within the dreamscape; Yusuf (Dileep Rao), the chemist who develops the potent sedatives needed for deep dreaming; and Ariadne (Elliot Page), a talented architect tasked with designing the elaborate, multi-layered dream worlds the team will navigate.
The team's target is Robert Fischer (Cillian Murphy), the heir to a vast business empire. Their objective: to plant the idea in Fischer's subconscious to dissolve his father's company, thereby giving Saito a strategic advantage. However, the mission is complicated by Cobb's own subconscious projections, particularly his deceased wife, Mal (Marion Cotillard), who manifests within the dream world and threatens to derail the operation.
The team embarks on a multi-layered journey into Fischer's subconscious, facing increasing challenges and risks as they delve deeper into the dreamscape. Ultimately, Cobb must confront his own inner demons and make peace with his past to ensure the mission's success and his chance at returning to his children.
