Flight goes to the core of addiction. This film is a journey a human takes back to their values. Rationalizations or lies we tell ourselves on this dark road is illustrated well. The only issue I have with the movie is the AA solution. AA may help some people but it creates dependency and group-thinkโ no magical deity is going make the addiction go away. Other programs unrelated to the 12-step (dogma) process help some people get back to taking personal responsibility. I realize that three factors make it tougher to overcome:
1. Lower dopamine
2. Pathways in the brain created during the time of addiction
3. Higher tolerance
Powerlessness and lifetime meeting obligations perpetuate someone actually making a choice to stop.
The film ended with the question, โwho are you?โ. This is the question an addict must answer to get back to your true self. Self examination is ultimately how an addict recognizes the denial of negative behaviors.
