I read the first book and couldn't bring myself to pick up the second, such was my bleak and hopeless outlook on any hope of redemption for the human species. This is not a criticism of the books, rather a commendation of Cronin's ability to crush all predisposed expectations of what is to come.
Eventually I did pick up the second book again and found myself turning pages avidly to reach the end, moving swiftly on to the final book, which, while still engaging, lacked the raw emotions evoked in the first and second novels.
What I am saying is....the books had power over the imagination on a terrific scale and I am not surprised a series has been made of this trilogy. However, having just watched the pilot, I am seriously struggling to find the same resonance as I felt reading the books.
For those of you who haven't read it, it's probably good enough but then, you don't know what you're missing :)
