Look, Iโm not saying this show is bad (I totally am) but Boruto is honestly just not a great character. (CONTAINS SPOILERS)
The story starts off displaying Boruto as a more bratty copy of Naruto that only ever complains about how lame his dad is, causes trouble and throws tantrums. For example, he tells his mother that Naruto is lucky to have never experienced having a father because his dad died. Why? Because Naruto didnโt come home for dinner. Pretty messed up. Later in the story, he does have somewhat decent character development so weโll ignore his bratty antics for now.
However, what I cannot ignore is how this story butchers any impression that Naruto and Naruto Shippuden has made. First of all, it is specified that skilled Jonin are typically able to only use 2 elements due to the chakra element one is born with. Yet somehow, at the age of 13, Boruto and most of his friends can use 2-3 elements with ease despite not being really taught about them. Jutsus that took ages and emotional turmoil for their parents to learn takes about a blink of an eye for Boruto and his friends to learn.
Fights in Boruto, aside from the ones that Naruto and Sasuke participate in are pretty lackluster. For example, the second Chunin exam arc, the fights just seemed really lazy and the use of scientific tools really dirties this view we had of how Naruto had to work so hard.
(SPOILER) For plot convenience, the story unnecessarily nerfs Naruto and Sasuke by killing off Kurama (still mad about this) and ridding Sasuke of his Rinnegan. Why? Because Boruto can be the strongest if both Naruto and Sasuke are at their best. Itโs a convenient turn if events that makes you feel like a hero has just died. And what do they try to substitute this hero with? A knockoff that cheats who thinks heโs the chosen one. Thatโs right, Boruto tries to cheat in the exams by using a tool that allows him to perform jutsus without any chakra. Itโs honestly just sad.
Overall, while there are some redeeming qualities, like the wholesome moments between Naruto and his family, his adoptive son Kawaki being an inter iguana character, and a somewhat interesting plot line, I can safely say:
Boruto is an unnecessary continuation of Naruto and it should have stopped at Shippuden. A modernised on-sale Naruto was something I never wanted or needed. But thatโs just how I feel.
Note: I could honestly say more but Iโll stop here. Also Iโve watched up to episode 228 so itโs not that Iโve only watched the first few episodes.
