Pros:
Master of None is funny (of course), heartwarming (all the friendships and relationships)and offers up some keen insights on... whatever each episode is about. The format is quite engaging, where each episode explores a different topic in the context of the protagonist and supporting cast's lives. It's very on point and relatable.
Cons:
I loved the show so this crucial detail they got completely wrong bothered me a lot. It suspends belief in the entire premise, honestly. The most annoying part it is this goof up could have been completely and easily avoided by just asking an actual Indian person (who's brought up in India, and not an Indian-American like Aziz who is a co-creator but still overlooked/didn't check this).
Aziz Ansari's character in the series is an American of Indian origin, specifically a Tamilian ( presumably from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu) and a Muslim. And his name is Dev Patel. Dev Patel, a Muslim Tamilian. What's wrong with that?
-Dev is one of the most Hindu names one can have! Yeah, it's a common name in India, but only amongst Hindus, it literally means God in Hindi. There would be no way an Indian-Muslim family would name their kid Dev. It's like a Christian naming their kid Hussein. It could happen, but only in theory (or a badly researched TV/Web show)
-Patel is a typical Gujarati surname, not a Tamilian one. Sure, maybe a Patel family moved to Tamil Nadu and became Tamilian, but both Aziz and the parents have distinctly South Indian features, so that doesn't really add up.
I mean they made a whole sub-plot of one episode on the "Indian accent" and then go and use the most stereotypical Indian Male Name they could find.
