I'm astonished (not really) at the "bliss[ful]" level of ignorance among the reviewers and critics regarding this predominantly great film. This is a movie portrayed through the minds of the severely mentally ill. It's intended as a window into their subjective minds and is not intended to be taken as literal. There are subtleties strewn all throughout this movie that are highly accurate to many who suffer from mental illness in combination with drug addiction.
For example, the signs that are seemingly in every other scene for drug rehab are distorted glimpses into their subconscious and their realization of the truth of their circumstances.
Another example: the police seemingly showing up out of nowhere is perfectly in line with someone who is strung out. That's how it would be perceived by them as their minds are often so impaired that they severely lose track of time and their suroundings. To them it would seem like the cops showed up seconds after shots were fired.
Critics are looking for a plot- I've yet to meet a mentally ill addict with a coherent plot. Their plots change from moment to moment, just as in the movie. They morph and change to fit their state of mind and that situation in a desperate attempt to stave off despair. Two people with similar conditions could- and do- build delusions such as is portrayed in this film. Everything in this film, when viewed through the perspective of someone who is mentally unwell, makes perfect sense.
It's such a strong indicator of the general ignorance of society as a whole regarding mental illness and drug usage that so many find this movie to be poorly constructed and unbelievable. I'm actually quite impressed with the grasp and depth of understanding this producer displays.
Is it perfect? Of course not. I would say that this would be impossible. Who can truly know unless they've experienced it themselves?
