I want to start off with this: you will enjoy the movie. I enjoyed the movie.
While I really did not have any laugh out loud moments until Goose came around, I did not want to leave either. There were some really cool moments that worth seeing first hand.
That said, this movie is not nearly as good/polished as other offshoots from the MCU (Ragnarok, Antman, Dr. Strange to name a few), and its not because it has a female lead. There were problems with the story, flow, music, character building, sound and such that is not related to the actress who I believe will be great in Avengers:Endgame. It's just not a "Great" movie compared to others in the same universe.
With that said, here is my take.
The opening fight scene felt unpolished, to the point where the sound in the theater sounded monotone and flat, as if it was patched together post production and jammed in last minute. I actually sat forward in my seat to see if somehow I was sitting wrong because it was so muffled and low. After speaking to my friend who saw the movie with me, he agreed completely. Was it the movie or theater(?) could be either, but the sound got better later on, so I am not sure.
While characters were likable, there were just odd exchanges throughout. Particularly, what was going on with Min Erva? She was a ancillary character, yet we seemed to be force-fed a line (and Definitely her name) every scene she was in. There were 5 members of the squad she was in, yet we were made to focus on her for what appears to be absolutely no reason. It just did not make sense.
There were a lot of other items that you can see from other reviews about plot holes jumbled story lines and such, but take it for what it is, an Action based origin story.
Ultimately for me though the single most game changing item of the movie was the music. GotG and Ragnarok were made better by the AMAZING songs they used and how and when they used them. There was all the potential for them to use the era to make this a GREAT movie, but I feel the music in this case hurt the movie more than helped as i was never connected through the flow and music it used.
This movie took place during a music revolution in the 90s, yet there appeared to be an agenda with what music was selected to play throughout the movie. The most egregious pick of music came during Capt Marvel's breakout fight scene where No Doubt "I'm Just A Girl" from Oct 1995 was used. Hey, it's catchy song and definitely a pop classic, however this song COMPLETELY missed the mark in the scene it was used. There was another song which came out April of 1995 was sitting there just WAITING that packs WAY more punch in Rob Zombies More Human than Human... I mean really, how was this missed in anyway shape or form? SPOILER: As a side note, you had two MEGA rock bands in NIN and GnR represented in this movie directly tied to Carol Danvers, but chose other music types not remotely powerful enough except for "Come as you are" by Nirvana.
Anyway, whether or not anyone cares or agrees, there is an agenda present. It appears that it gets in the way sometimes. I am all for a strong character, male or female, and I believe Capt Marvel is going to rock in Endgame, but the continuous force feeding of the theme for the sake of doing it was overused. You can push, promote or make awareness to an issue with much more subtlety and possibly have it be better conveyed and received, while not altering the movie to make a point. Between this, the items mentioned at the very beginning and and the poor music selections, I left the theater entertained but disappointed as this had the potential to be great.
Other than the immediate pre-credit scene and the other funny, but expected post credit scene, I would mark it better than Thor: Dark world, iron man 2 and 3 and any of the Hulk movies in my opinion, but not much more than that. You should definitely see it as a MCU fan for Capt Marvel and Fury's back story, but otherwise while it was entertaining, its just not very good.
