I loved this movie. In fact, I want to see it two more times before it leaves the theater. Haven't liked a movie this much, this year, since I saw Black Panther. Home run and I'm a movie buff that's very hard to please.
First off, I'm a loyal Marvel fan. I watched all the cartoons, read the comics when I was a kid and got all the figurines. Oh, and I spent my whole allowance on the cards. So, I like many hardcore Marvel fans, I'm hard to please when it comes to movies because I go into the movie with heavy expectations.
Studios have tough job with these types of movies: they have to please their core audience (me) and new fans who know nothing about the franchise in general. You can bomb if you allienate either one.
I came into this movie with very low expectations. Frankly, I thought Sony was pandering to minorities. In my mind it was like "let's make Spiderman black so it will generate the buzz that Black Panther got. That movie made 1 billion dollars so let's try it again."
Hollywood is a copycat industry. Risks are expensive so when they see something works - they ride it butcher it to death.
Personally, I like characters to more or less stick to who they were in the original comics. If you want to make a diverse movie, then create new characters. Don't make Wolverine Asian, Magneto Native American, or Beast a women just to fit some perceived quota. It gets the movie buzz, but cheapens the movie. I think that is a lesson the producers of Ghostbusters learned the hard way (which a good movie). They turned the movie into a cause, made their point and the movie flopped...
However, the way they made this movie was perfect. They stayed true to the old Spiderman while creating a new Spiderman (Miles) in a way that was nothing less than brilliant.
Everyone got what they wanted. If you love the old Spiderman, then you will still like this movie, because the old Spiderman is in it. If you think the Spiderman franchise was ready for a modern reboot, then you got that too. I feel like Sony got it right and everyone left happy.
Now, as far as the movie goes, the story was great. The action was great, cinematography was excellent, and acting was spectacular. Loved the way some scenes look like you're looking at an actual comic book scene.
Additnally, the different Spidermans from the other dimenstions added a great comedic twist to the entire storyline.
At the end of the movie I left entertained and feeling good about the whole thing. I was prepared for a letdown as I feared our ultra PC world had finally crept into Marvel. I feared that they were turning a beloved Marvel franchise into a cause at the expense of its original cannon. But, I left wanting to see the movie a 2nd, 3rd, and maybe 4th time.
