Depressing, forced subplots that mean nothing. All this should teach us that no matter what, people should be kind to others. The story could have been better developed, and I am sick of movies that end without following through. I have watched movies where Sandra Bullock was great, but this was not one. As soon as the film reveals that the little 5-year-old used the shotgun, I said gunpowder residue. Like we all haven't watched a million shows like CSI, or Law and Order. All capital crimes would have forensic investigations to build a case. No one wants to put a child through the trauma of an investigation, but she is already traumatized. The truth will out... It would have if this were a true story. This movie isn't even an original concept, just a dramatic way to elevate an actress for more award considerations. We, the general audience, are hoping to be entertained, not subjected to what the worst people will do with the smallest amount of information.
The scene in the law office was terrible. No one in their right mind would do 20 years in prison and then speak like that in the one place something realistic could be arranged. It was forced verbal abuse against two parents trying to do the best for the child. Why does selfish behavior enter the story over and over? She knows she is innocent, yet does everything to put up more barriers between herself and her goals. Ugly behavior by almost everyone in this film, aside from the lawyer. All around, a mediocre film among so many poor offerings from the entertainment industry.
Just my opinion, I am no critic. However, I know this will be hailed as a triumphant performance because of her popularity. Thankfully, I stopped watching award shows a few years ago. I would not recommend this film, but there are so few new shows or movies offered on streaming platforms, that we just mindlessly watch whatever is promoted. Do better, filmmakers, your potential audience is capable of understanding the complexities of life without being depressed for two hours.
