WARNING: spoilers, and, if you believe in god(s) or any other superstitious nonsense, this review will almost certainly cause offense. Probably best not to read any further.
The views expressed here are those of this author only. I have no idea if this was actually what the production team intended, it is my interpretation only.
A group of, mostly French, scientists (that they are scientists is no accident), studying the building blocks of the universe in an attempt to explain the origins of life, in remote Norway. They suddenly discover a seemingly endless rope, “which wasn’t there yesterday”, leading into the wilderness. And, being scientists, become obsessed with finding out why it’s there and where it goes, and determine to follow it.
The rope, in my opinion, is allegorical for life itself. Mankind is obsessed with finding answers, finding the “how”, and therefore, more importantly, the “why” of life. Historically, humans make up all sorts of ridiculous superstitious nonsense, such as god(s), the afterlife, spirituality etc. in an attempt to explain the meaning of life.
But, like the rope, there are no answers, there is no meaning.
If you want a show that’s going to give you answers, and wrap itself up in a neat little self-contained and complete package, you are probably going to hate this one.
But, if you do, I would suggest you are, quite ironically, missing the point entirely.
