This book was crafted in the most eerie, gut wrenching, mysterious, paranoid, edge of seat, yet glamorous way possible! Sylvia Moreno-Garcia displayed the protagonist Noemi Taboada in such a way that has you not only rooting for her as soon as she is introduced, but also wanting to be her if not befriend her! With such an adoring character, she makes up for all the graphic and grotesque moments in the book the will make you squirm while also wanting to know what happens next! Moreno-Garcia also creates a beautiful and unique homage to her home country with the setting of the book taking place in Mexico. What I really loved was how she unveiled the very unheard side of Mexico and it’s history of interference with the British colonial era. The author also dives into the topics of eugenics, which gives the book an interesting edge. Be that as it may, Sylvia Moreno-Garcia does an astonishing job finishing the book by letting the reader know the importance of every mysterious moment in the book. This Jane Eyre meets Dracula read is sure to keep even the “anti-spooky” engaged!
