I’m not even sure where to start. This is NOT Doctor Who. When I heard Disney was going to be a co-producer of Doctor Who, I was horrified but gave it a chance. What gives Doctor Who its charm is its “B Rating” style. This was jam packed with camera angles, studio lighting, and a crazy budget that you would not see in any other Who series’. The CGI was absolutely awful. The beauty about Doctor Who is almost all of its characters were practical, with VFX only being used as touch up in post. Now, we have an ARMY of disgusting, CGI ridden goblins performing an ENTIRE musical number. NOT TO MENTION, the Doctor and Ruby joined in on the performance which felt incredibly out of place. Throughout the episode the Doctor kept walking up to civilians and outright saying the civilians name to their face having never met them before. Yes, the Doctor has a tendency to flaunt his knowledge but not to random civilians and most definitely not to that extent. The Doctor is humble and knows not to boast to random people about his brain power. What I’ve just watched, was NOT the Doctor. There are so many small terrible moments that feel forced, just to make a plot. For example, why the hell did Ruby just stand on the roof for a solid 30 seconds watching the baby be stolen by the goblins, to then just say “omg i’m on the roof!”? Why did the ability of the goblins suddenly change out of nowhere with 0 explanation (the time traveling thing)? At least in the episode prior with Tennant, he explained that because he talked about superstitions at the edge of the universe, thats what bridged the gap to let the toy maker in. I am still left confused on how the goblins suddenly gained the ability to time travel. Even as a dedicated Whovian, I have found these specials incredibly hard to watch. I’ve found myself rolling my eyes and groaning several times throughout every special since Disney partially took over. Don’t get me wrong, the actors are phenomenal, I love their energy and their vibe. Ncuti Gatwa matches the exuberance and fills the role of the Doctor wonderfully, and I feel so bad that they have to perform this horrid writing. I understand Disney is a co-producer of Doctor Who now, but for gods sake keep it the same. There’s a reason this show has been going on for 60+ years with only a short break between 89’ and 05’ for its revival. I hate you modern Disney You ruined my Marvel You ruined my Star Wars and now. You’ve ruined my Doctor Who Worst, Aidan
