Christian bale was a great actor in this movie. Hands down. That being said that was the only part of the movie I liked. Now in watching this movie, if it was meant to be a biographical satire then I get it. However the only thing I fear with this movie is that it really shapes a one way narrative on historical events and people without much giving any real voice to the other side and the explanation of the "why" they did what they did and excluding facts. So if you are in favor of one sided narratives then this is the movie for you on Cheney. However the movie really paints Cheney as an over ambitious, evil plotting, and political villain. Which really I think it is an unfair bias on the family and the man himself. For one, no was able to predict or foresee 9/11. Everyone can agree for those that were alive and around on that day it changed everything on how we looked at security, terrorist, and intelligence gathering. But the movie tends to really paint a portrait of the man as though he were doing these things for his own political self interest. Now whether he did or not we truly do not know and to play madlibs in filling in holes we truly do not know kinda does this portray a disservice to the viewers. Because all your trying to do is shape the audience to your own analysis and bias narrative on Cheney instead of letting the audience think for themselves and shape their own opinions.
Now of course I love biographical peices and historical portrayals on people and events. As long as it is done accurately and fairly. But the way this movie sets it up as a historical biopic combined with political satire. So that is why I give it a negative review because I like to separate fact from satire. To try and combines them is not only confusing but exhausting as well. Not I now satire is based on facts because that is why it is called satire. However the movie kinda comes across more of a biographical piece in how it is woven. With serious narrative satire overtones. So it kinda makes it tiring because you are trying to think are you making a satire or a biographical drama based on the man.
This is just my opinion but I am firmly against making movies on political events and people until at least 30-40yrs have gone by. Reason why because it at least separates on the political and ideological distortion that tends to bully and drowns out the real facts and decisions on why events and choices took place. It allows time for researchers to get accurate information on both sides in Hope's they do not give a one sided opinion on portraying the real facts. By the way a president 's administration is never fully written or told accurately until 50-60yrs have gone by after their administration has ended. Just for that reason alone I have explained above as to why that is.
So in hindsight if you hate Cheney the man or hated the entire W Bush administration then this is the movie for you. Because if you like one sided narratives with spotty research and facts then it's a movie for you. I mean if it is meant to be strictly a satire then I would say they accomplished that in parts. But it is a satirical very biased love letter to people that hated this entire administration from the beginning and Cheney the man. But the point being, as long as I can remember, is that W. Got more animosity than Cheney I believe. At least in the public eye. VP'S never really get much attention in the first place in presidential administration. That being said I would give this movie a 1 out of 5.
