I was quite impressed with this book which I picked up at my former university's inventory sale. The title appealed to me and when I saw it was a first time author of a novel I was hooked. I have been reading books by first time authors for years. Once I got into the book I could not put it down. It was very easy reading. My knowledge of this part of B.C is very familiar as I live on Vancouver Island and am a History major and a MA degree in Cultural Studies from the same university that the author Karen Charleson attended. The ending was not what I expected but the intermingling side stories certainly were interesting and this is what kept me reading the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about the daily life of a fisherman's family along the coastal waters of Vancouver Island. Also to learn about the secrets that one family can harbour during generations on their lives can be further explained.
