[Precursor]
170 hours (primarily played offline)
first playthrough
melee only and no summons (str/dex build)
Previously enjoyed DS1 + DLC and DS3.
[Good]
open world success
exploration rewarding
progressive
culmination of refined mechanics from soulsbourne series
unobtrusive UI
fast travel and well placed checkpoints for the most part
[Bad]
however and unfortunately,
highly front-loaded
quality not sustainable throughout
really becomes mixed bag
far and few between to find version of the same quality the likes to which inherently was promised earlier in game
the scale as grand and majestic, as it is, however I think caught up with the development life cycle
the game really devolves from mountain tops of the giants and onwards...
Fire Giant
[Bosses Perspective]
Margit
Godrick The Grafted
*** set an unsustainable precedence ***
worthy mentions:
Morgott
Rykard
Godfrey / Hoarah Loux
Radagon
Saving Grace:
Melania
Mohg, Lord of Blood
*** undoubtedly imho the best bosses in the game
[Melania]
controversial
set new precedence
fast approaching consensus for possibly hardest boss fight in soulsbourne although some would argue that being waterfowl dance centric.
forces players to adapt in new ways (not limited to Ashes Summons)
After initially questioning this boss design altogether - something I expect most will do - I learned vigoriously, was enlightened and eventually got past my own stubborness.
It may not be a popular opinion but I think this boss is "ahead of it's time" and it is hands down the greatest boss I have ever played.
[Summary]
The deviations made to the dna upon which FromSoftware has thrived, may now be under closer scrutiny:
- constructing artificial difficulty
- role and effect of Ashes Summons on game balance
this may be a mutation to the souls dna some players may not accept
DS1 + DLC and especially DS3, playthrough towards and up to and including the summit was something to behold.
Personally, end game became an absolute draining slog and was highly disappointing
