Away, for me, was a really really beautiful movie with absolutely gorgeous visuals and a really simple story. A boy finds himself being chased by a large dark entity through scenic landscapes with only a tiny chick for companion. The whole movie revolves around the said boy's exploration throughout the lands and the forging and development of a strong bond with his chick all the while trying to escape the pursuit by his unknown assailant.
The movie's biggest highlights are the INSANELY AESTHETIC visuals....with a whole lot of light and shadow manipulation to create a variety of textures and landscapes. From forests to hills to mountains to sea to waterfalls to deserts to oasis.....this film has it all. The scenery and background is animated so beautifully that i found myself checking out the surroundings more often than looking at the character himself. The scenery in general are really eye pleasing and calming and relaxing in a strange way. The animation makes the whole movie look like it just jumped out of the visually similar game: The Oasis(both are not related in any way though.)
As far as the storyline is concerned thats a drawback. The movie largely stays in the present and there is absolutely no mention or explanation of the characters' past...neither any reason of why the entity is chasing him,nor any intoduction to the character, except a slight reference as to how the boy came about to be where he is. There is no voice in the movie( boy doesnt speak throughtout) but the sound effects are particularly well edited and very satisfying(opening of water bottle, starting the bike, eating a fruit, chirping of the chick to name a few).
For most people this movie might turn out to be boring as it is slow and takes it time to pace up and without any explanation. But people like me might enjoy this, purely because of the gorgeous visuals and stunning "levels" in the world shown.( I found mirror lake the best.) The point of the movie, though,is to enjoy what is being shown and retain the mystery behind the character, which unusually adds another layer of beauty and enigma in the film. A film by Gints Zilbalodis,it certainly is intriguing and people who are serious about their animation might find it a worthy watch. I'll definitely be checking out more films from this animator.
4 stars. For the zen-like 3d animation and interesting,if not completely explained, storyline and overall plot.
