I enjoy offbeat comedies like Nacho Libre, Napoleon Dynamite and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. However I wouldn’t classify this movie as a comedy, dark or otherwise. More of an offbeat dark/disturbing drama and a commentary on insecurity and severe mental illness with a focus on extremely toxic masculinity. While I could see the attempts at awkward humor, the darkness of it quickly dampened it. In this the preview was misleading. However, I couldn’t stop watching. I had to see it play out. The acting was very good and the characters darkly interesting. Ultimately the protagonist followed the prophecy of the antagonist/mentor, which made him repulsive. Some justice at the end, but all the characters are deranged.
