I feel like people are sort of bashing this show because they won't stop comparing it to its predecessor, The Haunting of Hill House. However, I went into this show knowing that had absolutely nothing to do with Hill House. So I tried my hardest to forget that Hill House even existed while watching Bly Manor. Yes, the show is slow and only gets to actual creepy bits at around episode 4 or 5 (each episode being around an hour long). Yes, there is a lot of talking. But I think that this is better than jump scare after jump scare because that can also get really repetitive and boring. I prefer a more phycological approach to horror or horror is really deep in story. That's why don't really like slasher films, they simply don't have enough story for me. The only show that was good enough for me was American Horror Story... until around season 7 or 8 and then I got bored of it, but that's for a different review. The point is is that when The Haunting anthology series started I was really, really happy that it was heavy in story and had several twists. However, as much as jump scare after jump scare can get boring, talking after talking can also get boring. There are a couple episodes that I had too much talking and too much story crammed into one episode. In Hill House there was a lot of story in each episode, but in that show it kept going from past to present. In this show, at least for some episodes, about 75 percent is the past. The 3 episodes that I am referring to are episodes 2,3, and 7. Some of you may be thinking, "well episode 9 of Hill House was almost entirely set in the past." This is obviously correct. However, in that episode several questions that viewers wanted answers too from the beginning were answered. The biggest one being how (or why) Olivia went insane. People were anticipating an episode that gave a full explanation of one of the biggest mysteries in the show, and they got it. The Haunting of Bly Manor kept drawing out things that, let's be honest, we didn't really want the answer to. This is most prevalent in episode 2 "The Pupil." Sure, maybe you cared about why Miles was expelled, but nobody wanted this to be the main topic of an episode. Remember, each episode is about an hour long, episode 2 just felt way too drawn out for something that could be answered very quickly. This is the same for episode 3 and 7, The Two Faces Parts 1 and 2 respectively. The only difference between these episodes and episode 2 is that they actually held answers that were vital to the story. Yet still, the answers and explanations seemed drawn out and over complicated. The Haunting of Bly Manor is not scary. It just simply isn't. This is one thing that I think all of us can agree on. That's why people are tagging it with the genre gothic romance. This is 100 percent, without a doubt in my mind, true. It is romance with horror elements, it's that simple. I feel like it was a mistake to tag Bly Manor as a horror, because people started watching the show for the scares and got upset that they got barely any at all. In the end of it all, I enjoyed every bit of The Haunting of Hill House. I did not enjoy every bit of The Haunting of Bly Manor. That is in no way saying that Bly Manor is a bad show. Its just not one of those masterpieces that only come out every 5 to 10 years, Hill House is. There are only 3 episodes that can get kind of boring at times, and even those episodes are not necessarily bad. I'd say from around episodes 4 to the end, it's a really good show, except for episode 7.
