this show was an amazing watch, i was honestly surprised. i passed over it at first because the synopsis seemed like it was gonna be a bubblegum teen show that netflix is usually known for doing, but it was nothing like that at all. i loved that while it was a teen show, they also focused on aspect’s of the mother’s life as well and it wasn’t just one-sided from ginny’s perspective. even as twenty-two year old, i found a lot of what ginny was going thru to be relatable. ginny was a hypocritical character and i understand a lot of people saying she was an annoying character, but i appreciated it very much. the writers weren’t afraid to let her be wrong and dramatic and just plain dumb sometimes. she was a fifteen year old girl, she’s entitled to mess up A LOT. besides that — as you can see, most of the low ratings for this show are because of a one-liner about taylor swift that literally towards at the end of the show. i think it was supposed to play into ginny’s character being hypocritical and not to be taken seriously or to attack taylor. do not let this one line of a ten episode show completely deter you away from watching an amazing series for yourself. all the characters and actors were great and i hope to see them on screen again for a season two!
edit — if i had to critique one thing about the show, it would be to dig deeper into ginny’s black history more. i loved the addition of the black friend and how she shared her struggles as a full black student at the school and not just a biracial student. i would love to see ginny explore that side of herself more with her father or with classmates at school.
